Wholethread

Export a Microsoft Teams chat to JSON, HTML or text

To export a Microsoft Teams chat, open the conversation in Teams on the web (teams.microsoft.com or teams.live.com), install the Wholethread extension for Chrome, click Export, and choose JSON, HTML or plain text. The file is saved to your Downloads folder.

Add Wholethread to Chrome

Wholethread runs entirely in your browser. It has no server, no account and no analytics, and it makes no network requests of its own.

What does Wholethread save?

Wholethread saves the Microsoft Teams conversation that is open in your browser. Exported messages stay in order, with sender and time where Teams shows them. Check the export's completeness result, and its attachment and transcript counts, before treating it as a complete record. A reply is saved together with the message it quotes.

How do I use it?

  1. Install Wholethread from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open the conversation you want in Teams on the web.
  3. Click Export, pick a format and any options, and keep the Teams tab visible until the file is saved to your Downloads folder.

Is it private?

Yes. Everything happens inside your own browser, on your own computer. The extension has no server, needs no account, and has no analytics or telemetry. The files it creates go only to your Downloads folder. Read the full privacy policy.

What does it not do?

Is Wholethread free?

Every feature is free during launch. Voice transcripts, attachment downloads, the completeness check and new-messages-only exports will become paid later, and the extension will say so before that happens.

Frequently asked questions

How do I export a Microsoft Teams chat?

Open the chat in Teams on the web, click Export in the Wholethread panel, choose JSON, HTML or plain text, and wait for the file to appear in your Downloads folder.

Can I export a Teams chat to a file I can read or search?

Yes. HTML opens in any browser, plain text opens in any editor, and JSON suits scripts and other tools. Exported messages keep their sender and time where Teams shows them.

Can I save Teams attachments and images too?

Yes, if you tick the option. Shared files and images are downloaded into an attachments folder beside the export. The default limits are 500 MB per file and 1,000 MB per export.

Can I turn Teams voice messages into text?

Yes, where Teams provides a transcript. Wholethread copies the transcription that Teams shows for each voice message. It does not transcribe audio itself, and the export says so when Teams has no transcript.

Does it work with the Teams desktop app?

No. Wholethread works with Microsoft Teams in the browser only, at teams.microsoft.com or teams.live.com.

How do I know the whole chat was exported?

Wholethread runs a completeness check. It reports whether the start of the chat was reached, and flags breaks in the crawl and long date gaps. Attachments and voice transcripts that could not be saved are counted separately, so check both.

Can I export only part of a chat?

Yes. Set a From and To date to export a range. A repeat run can add only the messages that are new since the last export.

Does my chat leave my computer?

No. The extension has no server and makes no network requests of its own. The export goes to your Downloads folder only.

How much does it cost?

Every feature is free during launch. Voice transcripts, attachment downloads, the completeness check and new-messages-only exports will become paid later, and the extension will say so before that happens.
